Second Mile

Second Mile Development receives clothing and household items from Unclaimed Baggage. These goods are repurposed and used to meet a variety of needs for struggling families in the Huntsville, Alabama area.

Items are sent to the Neighborhood Store where they can be purchased at a low cost. Families without means are given the opportunity to work and earn credit for the things they need.

Revenue generated by the Neighborhood Store is used to support several other initiatives. Second Mile offers affordable school supplies, a preschool program, parent training, support, and encouragement to become involved in their children’s education.

All of Second Mile’s programs revolve around empowerment of families. Founded on the principle in Matthew 5:41, “And if one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles,” Second Mile goes the extra mile as they come alongside families to restore dignity and provide opportunity and hope.

Helping Thousands See Clearly

09- 2-2011

We get thousands and thousands of reading, sun and prescription eyeglasses each year. Out of all the eyeglasses that we receive we donate thousands of these pairs to our local chapter of The Lions Club International for their Sight First program.

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged The Lions Club to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." And they accepted. They in turn, spend countless volunteer hours assessing the glasses and determining what type of prescription they are. They are then carried to different parts of the world, where the Lions volunteer their time and resources to provide quality vision care in desolate areas.

Lions Club Eyeglass Donation

Unclaimed Baggage is proud to be a major donor to this wonderful program. Do you know anyone who has benefited from The Lions Clubs’ Sight First program?
