Couture for a Cure
Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UBC sponsors a luncheon to raise funds for the local breast cancer assistance program. Dressed in high-fashion designs from Unclaimed Baggage, breast cancer survivors, patients and family members “walk the runway” at the annual sold-out luncheon.
This event always creates a lot of excitement, particularly as cancer patients and survivors are applauded as they model beautiful designer clothes for the luncheon guests. Being a model at the luncheon has helped many women who were stricken with cancer to recover a sense of their beauty and confidence, which may have been diminished during treatments.

Each year Unclaimed Baggage is proud to participate in Operation Christmas Child. This outstanding outreach, which is part of Samaritan’s Purse, helps reach tens of thousands of children around the world each year.
By filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy, t-shirts, ball caps and many other “treasures” boys and girls experience Christmas. This year you can Operation Christmas child surpass 100 million shoe box gifts packed and distributed since 1993.

Give Blood- 8 Billion Mosquitos Can't be Wrong

One of our core values at Unclaimed Baggage is giving back to our community. We believe that part of our social responsibility is to reach out and help our neighbors. Our most recent outreach has been in partnering with Blood Assurance here in Jackson County Alabama. Blood Assurance set up a collection point here at UBC to help in the critical effort of collecting blood for those in need.

Consider these statistics as reported by The Red Cross
- Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
- More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
- The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O.
- The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
- Sickle cell disease affects more than 80,000 people in the U.S., 98 percent of whom are African American. Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives.
- More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
- A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood
The need is always present. If you didn’t get the opportunity to give at Unclaimed Baggage be sure to contact your local Blood Assurance or Red Cross, locate a blood drive location and get involved.
Have you ever given blood?
Eyeglass Donation
06-12-2012

One of the great privileges we have at Unclaimed Baggage is the opportunity to reclaim for good what has been lost or unclaimed. Not only do we give clothes, electronics and jewelry a second life by selling them at amazing prices but we have the opportunity to donate things like glasses to those who can’t afford them or don’t have access to them.
For many years we have partnered with the Lions Club Recycle for Sight program. Just last week we donated almost 19,000 pairs of glasses – 53 boxes!!
Throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses they collect from around the country. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact.
