Lake Guntersville Water Activities

A cornerstone of the Jackson County area for living and recreation is the 69,000 acre Lake Guntersville, Alabama’s largest lake.

It was created in 1938 when the Tennessee Valley Authority dammed portions of the Tennessee River to control flooding and provide low-cost hydroelectric power.

Today, Lake Guntersville is nationally known for largemouth bass and has been the site of the National Bass Master’s Tournament.

Skiing, boating, paddle boarding and personal water craft are great ways to spend a day on the water.

Jackson County on Lake Guntersville

The fishing in Jackson County on Lake Guntersville is incredible. The fishing success on Lake Guntersville is well documented, having received national attention with anglers reeling in many of the biggest bass in the world.

A great variety of other fish such as white and black crappie, bluegill, shellcracker, blue catfish, channel catfish, sauger and white and yellow bass also thrive in the vast waters of Lake Guntersville.

Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove

25 minutes west of Scottsboro on Hwy. 72 (take 450 Old Hwy., 431 South)

Ok, now the truth is out. Our area has a number of great golf courses. It’s a bit more than a shopping trip when you have a Robert Trent Jones course (54 holes!) to play. Think you can talk Dad into coming now?

Hunting Grounds of Jackson County

Word of the “buck a day” limit on deer has spread and hunters from throughout the South and beyond come regularly to the fertile hunting grounds of Jackson County.

The season is long, the variety of game is impressive and the settings – from open fields and forests to swamps and high bluffs – can accommodate even the most demanding of hunters. Duck and white-tail deer are the draw in late fall through winter.

There is also a good variety of small game including dove, quail, squirrel, rabbit and turkey. Hunting is available on over 50,000 acres of the refuge and management area and through private hunting clubs.

The Bat Cave (Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge)

Located just above the Sauty Creek embayment of TVA’s Guntersville Reservoir, 7 miles west of Scottsboro.

One of the most interesting natural sights in Alabama, indeed, in the Southeast, are the summer evening emergences from Sauta Cave of over 250,000 gray bats.

A hint for visitors: A cap, hood or umbrella should be used while viewing, as visitors may be “put upon” while enjoying the show! A little planning will prevent observers from carrying home an unwanted souvenir of the experience.
